Mountains Are Like Pegs
In the Quran, God mentions that the Earth used to shake. If the Earth would continue to shake, there could be no life on Earth. To solve this problem, mountains were created. Mountains are very similar to pegs that hold down a tent.
It wasn’t until recently that geologists found out that the Earth had once been shaking. The Quran confirmed this 1400 years ago. The book Earth, which was written by Jimmy Carter’s scientific advisor, Emeritus Frank Press confirms that all mountains have a root that is much deeper than the actual height of the mountain.
The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is around 9 km tall; its root though is more than 125 km deep! This type of shape with the root deeper than the top part is best described as a peg, because a properly set peg will have the top more hidden than the bottom. The exact words that the Quran uses are: Have We not made the earth as a bed and the mountains its pegs? This verse is in surah Naba ayahs 6 and 7.
Mountains are created by 2 tectonic plates that have force against each other. The stronger plate gets pushed to the bottom, while the other juts out at the top, thus creating a mountain. The roots of the mountain are on the magma layer of the Earth. They prevent the Earth from sliding over that layer.
