Prophet Muhammad (saw) told us how to eat in the Sunnah. He would eat with his fingers, and he always encouraged eating together. In a hadith narrated by Kaab bin Malik, his father said that the Prophet (saw) used to eat with three fingers. There is research involving this that will be addressed later. In another hadith narrated by Umar (ra), The Prophet (saw) said, ‘Eat together, and do not separate, for blessing is in the company” Scientific research has also provided reasons to eat to together.
Many American and European restaurants are starting to take away peoples eating utensils. Like chef Roi Choi, who says that people eating with forks is like “nails on chalkboard” They say that in order to “interact with food” we need to eat with our hands. There are actually scientific reasons for eating with your hands too. One of them is that it prevents over eating. According to Casper Poyck, a culinary expert, usually when we eat, it takes the stomach 15-20 minutes to signal to the brain that we’ve eaten enough. The more senses we use, the faster our brain can register that we are full. Therefore, we eat less! Another discovery is that because our fingertips have nerve endings, the food handling and temperature causes our stomach to release enzymes that makes digestion easier.
The other eating habit that the Prophet (saw) encouraged was eating together. According to the Washington State Dairy Council, and Washington State University extention, eating together creates unity. When a family sits down and eats together, there are less chances of overeating, because there are people, and it reduces the chance of teenagers getting anorexia. Eating together also saves time and money. When food is cooked at home, time is saved, rather than being in a restaurant, ordering, and waiting and then packing…. All of which takes a long time
In conclusion, the Sunnah way of eating is the best way possible.
